Our Adoption Process

Each dog and cat in our rescue group is special.  Every one has it's own unique personality and needs.  Not every dog or cat is right for every home.  Our adoption process is designed to make sure you and your new pet will have a successful future together.   We encourage you  to review our Welcoming Your New Pet page  before continuing with your planned adoption.  You can also read Are You Ready  and Avoiding Placement Errors to see how we like to ensure a successful adoption.

Rescued dogs are very different than dogs you would receive from a breeder.  In almost every case the dog will have been subjected to tremendous stress from being in the pound or being moved from their original home to new places - all in a very short period of time.  IT IS CRITICAL that you are prepared to help your new pet make this transition.  Please read our Welcoming Your New Pet page to prepare you for adopting a RESCUED dog.

Assessment - Matching the Dog and the Adopter

bullet An STS adoption specialist discusses the dog or cat of choice with the adopter.
bullet The STS adoption specialist discusses needs and temperament of dog with individual/family.  Remember - every animal is different and not every animal will be the right match for your family -even if your family is perfectly qualified to adopt.
bullet Both needs of the dog or cat and and the criteria of the family are very carefully assessed to assure the best match possible.  Items considered include:
bullet Temperament and age of dog or cat
bullet Veterinary/health needs of dog or cat
bullet Individual/families desires and perception of the perfect pet
(no match is “perfect” but STS strives for the best match possible)
bullet Ability of individual/family to meet the veterinary, daily-living, behavioral and emotional needs of the dog or cat.
bullet STS always visits the home of any adoptive family. If the family lives out of state, STS may arrange for another local rescue to conduct the home visit.
bullet Other means of assessment include:
bullet Veterinary reference
bullet Personal references by two to three individuals who know the adopter and the adopter’s capability to provide a loving home for an animal
