Meet Daphne, a sweet Rottweiler puppy.

We saw Daphne at the Licking County Shelter on a routine trip to rescue a dog that was about to be put to sleep.  She was in her cage limping and we knew the warden would soon put her down - so we rescued her.  She was probably hit by a car and abandoned.

A trip to our vet revealed that not only did Daphne have a broken leg but also pneumonia.  She would need an operation for her leg but it would have to wait until the pneumonia subsided.  The vets at OSU Animal Hospital initially estimated that her surgery would cost about $2500.   Daphne went to OSU today for an evaluation and the vets there let us know that somehow the bones were healing in such a way that surgery would not be needed.  A miracle for sure!  Her treatment for the pneumonia required hospitalization which cost $800 including all of her antibiotics and pain killers for her leg.  Here treatment today at OSU was $400.  We really hope to find a generous sponsor for Daphne.

Meet Holly, an affectionate German Wirehaired Pointer

We saw Holly at the Licking County Shelter on a routine trip to rescue a dog that was about to be put to sleep.  She was in her cage with marks around her neck where a chain had clearly been embedded.  She was severely neglected and malnourished.  It was clear that she had just had puppies and was "thrown away" when she was no longer of use.  Her chain had been removed by the previous owners.  We think that she may have been force bred to produce many litters of pups that would yield a lot of money for the owners.

After a routine laser spay operation Holly developed complications that caused her to bleed and she was rushed to the OSU Veterinary Hospital for emergency surgery.  Her successful surgery at OSU cost $2300.  True to our name we could not let her be put down as she has probably never known a loving indoor home.

Holly loves to cuddle.  Despite everything she has been through, she is very sweet and affectionate and just wants to be loved .  She is quiet and rarely barks.  Very good with other dogs, people, cats and children.  We are desperate for donations to help pay for her care.  Holly's foster Mom is working with Holly to build her confidence and ability to trust.  Please consider sponsoring or adopting this sweet girl, she will make a very loyal companion and has lots of love to give.

Sport

Sport is a kind-hearted, very very large Rottweiler, weighing 96 lbs! Hailing most recently from the Perry county dog shelter, he is about 4-5 years old according to the vet who saw him. Unfortunately, Sport is heartworm positive. Sport is very laid back. He gets along well with other dogs and people. Sport will started heartworm treatment during the week of 2/18/07. We are in great need of a foster home for Sport where he can lots of love and attention while recovering from his treatment.  For more information about Sport please contact Lynne

Henry

Henry was just rescued from a high kill shelter where he was slated to be put down. This big love bug seems to know sit and down already. Henry is also heartworm positive. He began treatment during the week on 2/24/07 and is in foster care. His foster mom loves him and says he is a GREAT dog, and very affectionate. We are in need of sponsors for the cost of Henry's treatment. If you have specific questions about Henry, please contact Lynne

Navarro

Navarro is a darling sweet chow mix He has been shaved. Navarro is being fostered with one of our volunteers who has a farm full of animals including many cats.  He gets along with everyone - cats, dogs, people and is described as a "total love bug". We rescued Navarro from Licking County.  The poor little guy was limping and we found out that he has a grade 3 luxating patella and needs surgery asap.  Our dear friend Dr. Holly Ray in Warren Ohio has agreed to perform the surgery at a reduced cost so we can help stop his suffering.  If you would like to help us pay for his medical care, we desperately need your donations.  If you are interested in helping us pay for this sweet little guys much needed care, please complete the form below and you will be contacted by one of our volunteers.  Or if you like you can send a donation directly to our Treasurer, her mailing address is on our main page.

Foxie

Foxie is a tiny female Pom mix. This sweet little  has kennel cough and a fractured leg, poor little thing. Right now her leg has a splint and we are sending the ex-ray to our favorite veterinary surgeon Dr. Holly Ray for her opinion on whether surgery is needed. Her sister is Snowball who, right now, appears to be in perfect health. . We just got these siblings into our rescue. Foxie is about 4.7 lbs and Snowball is about 6 lbs. They are adorable but we are just getting to know them.   If you are interested in helping us pay for this sweet little girls road to recovery, please complete the form below and you will be contacted by one of our volunteers.  Or if you like you can send a donation directly to our Treasurer, her mailing address is on our main page.

Baylee

Baylee is a sweet girl that came to us from Pike County where he almost didn't make it out. Baylee had emergency abdominal surgery on 6/5/07. We thought she was pregnant and having some issues but Dr. Fryer did surgery last night and found that she had a huge blockage caused by ingesting a rawhide that blocked her intestines. This little girl is such a trooper. She pulled through and continues to do well. Her surgery was very expensive for our very small rescue group.  While we pay off large bills like this we have to cut back on saving dos as we only have so much money to go around.  If you are interested in helping us pay for this sweet little girls road to recovery, please complete the form below and you will be contacted by one of our volunteers.  Or if you like you can send a donation directly to our Treasurer, her mailing address is on our main page.

Give to Mandi's Heartworm Fund and help us save dogs who are heartworm positive.

Rest in peace, precious Mandi.  This sweet baby died in her sleep during the morning of 9/17/06.  Mandi was heartworm positive and also had a very bad upper respiratory infection, most likely pneumonia.  We treated her at two veterinary hospitals, the later offered inpatient care and isolation since Mandi's respiratory infection was contagious. Our hope was to get her physically ready for the painful heartworm treatment.  The vet said the infection, coupled with her "high" heartworm positive led to her death.  This loss is a testament to the lack of  care our animals endure at some of our state's rural shelters.  Mandi was most likely very sick for several weeks prior to rescue, however, most of our state's animals who are unfortunate enough to end up in the county shelters, lack veterinary assessment and proper care.  Many county shelters have funding to provide the barest of essentials and veterinary care (including shots) is rarely provided.    We only regret that we did not hear about Mandi sooner.  Unfortunately many dogs suffer the same neglect as Mandi has.

We have established a fund in her memory to help other dogs that we rescue who are heartworm positive. We would like to give a special thanks to those have donated toward Mandi's veterinary care.

Heartworm is a deadly disease requiring painful  treatment. The treatment is expensive (about $1200) and can be easily prevented by owners using a heartworm preventive that only costs about $4.00 to $5.00 per month.

Pauly  - Lost to Heartworm

Pauly was a 4 year old pure bred Chow Chow, who was rescued from the Paulding Animal Shelter on September 29, 2006. He had a rescue group in New Jersey, willing to take him, but when he tested positive for heartworm, the rescue fell through. We did our very best to help sweet Pauly and he did receive  heartworm treatment but he just didn't make it.  We will miss you sweet boy.  Pauly wants everyone to know that Heartworm is very easily prevented and asks all of you to PLEASE make the effort to keep your dogs treatment up to date.  It is very inexpensive to prevent but not so cheap to treat often costing between 1200-1500.  Spare yourself this unnecessary expense, for Pauly's sake.
